THE BIG RELEASE
Ori And The Will Of The Wisps
XO, PC ★★★★★
IN THE past ten years, gaming’s 2D metroidvania subgenre — with its hallmarks of harder-than-average platformer gameplay and labyrinthine landscapes — has undergone a reboot of sorts. The likes of Dead Cells and Hollow Knight have helped revive the popular ’80s craze but it was Moon Studios’ Ori And The Blind Forest, released in 2015, that truly fanned the embers. Now the white guardian sprite is back with another emotional masterpiece.
In Ori And The Will Of The Wisps you control Ori himself, a spirit of the forest with strange, impressive abilities. As with the first game, Ori has an adopted family — Naru and Gumo, both quirky creatures of the wood — and this time they’re joined by Ku, a baby owl with a broken wing.
Needless to say, things go awry and Ori is transported to a mysterious island where he has to save his little winged pal from certain doom. If it sounds basic in terms of plot, that’s because Ori has a different kind of storytelling: one found in the gentle narration, hypnotic level design, operatic soundtrack and beautifully sketched (and mostly speechless) cast of characters, who are so lovingly created and intoxicatingly real they’ll make your heart ache.
If Ori is an absolute dreamscape to get lost in, its adrenaline-infused gameplay is second to none. Ori can jump, climb and dash, whizzing across jagged arenas with fantastical names such as Inkwater Marsh while bashing unique enemies and breaking up obstacles.
As he goes, he collects health and energy shards, and learns new tricks and upgrades, with these frequent abilities allowing the player to access previously inaccessible areas. But it’s the fluidity of Ori’s movement that sets the experience apart. Early on you’ll acquire the ability to fire arrows of light to unlock timed gates. Once mastered, you’ll find another ability that allows you to slingshot from glowing buds hanging from the ceiling. A few frames of the latter and you’ve cracked that ability too.
And then Ori does something brilliant: it throws down the gauntlet of having you combine these two new-found abilities in order to navigate a particularly tricky sequence, firing and sling-shooting across an idiosyncratic obstacle course to reinvigorate the seized-up cogs of an ancient wellspring. Over time, more customisable power-ups are added and you’ll need to use all these skills in chained combinations to crack puzzles and unearth new zones as the game’s traversal becomes a bewildering string of brilliantly timed executed moves. Meanwhile, Ori becomes a glowing blur of grace and precision — and, it must be said, failure, because this is a game where you will die quite a bit.
Phonetray. Ori is so well designed, however, that you’re always pulled back in and that’s part of its appeal. It’s endlessly memorable: each encounter with the lemur-like Momi or the amphibian Kwolok feels like something out of a classic children’s book (Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man was a huge influence on the first game). The challenging sequences are both puzzling and electrifying, enticing you to see if you can conquer them again.
This is also an electric assault on the senses. It’s all bright neon colours and haunting distant sounds, with an impressively sprawling map and a tale that’s magical and melancholy without ever being mawkish. A true feat of modern gaming, then, and one of the greatest sequels of all time.
The verdict
A masterpiece in game design and interactive storytelling. Far deeper and richer than the original.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team
![Cracked Cracked](/uploads/1/1/7/8/117804673/545644548.jpg)
A remake of a 15-year-old game that was slated upon its original release has no right to be this good. It’s bolstered by super art direction and a blissful soundtrack, with a welcome overhaul of combat and exploration. There’s also a surprisingly moving Pokémon story here too, certainly enough to outdo the frustrating boss levels and repetitive dungeons. (DX, NS)
Townsmen: A Kingdom Rebuilt
Originally released on PC and Switch, this slimmed-down and warm RTS is a familiar town management sim with good, child-friendly tutorials and interesting resource management mechanics. Sadly for fans of the genre, there are few innovations and most play-throughs splutter out in a stream of bad decisions and infuriating combat. (PS4, XO)

Ori And The Will Of The Wisps Soundtrack Cracked
This lovely pixel art but hardcore and grisly kingdom management game puts Game Of Thrones to shame. You play as Eryk, King of Davern, who has to listen to petitioners, family woes and resource reviews in order to keep things happy and the coffers balanced. Inspired by the game Papers, Please, the decision-making is brutal and the joy short-lived. (PC)
